Philippines weather bureau issues red alert for heavy rains across Luzon

The state weather bureau issued a red rainfall warning—its most severe alert classification—over three provinces in Luzon as the southwest monsoon system, locally known as the habagat, persisted across the archipelago.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) advisory issued at 11 a.m. Friday, the red warning level indicates dangerously heavy rainfall expected in the affected areas. The designation signals an elevated risk of flooding and landslides in vulnerable communities.

Red rainfall warnings represent the highest alert tier in Pagasa's four-level warning system, preceding only when conditions reach critical emergency status. Residents in the affected provinces were urged to exercise caution and avoid areas prone to flooding and mudslides.

The southwest monsoon pattern is expected to maintain its grip on the region in coming days. Pagasa advised the public to monitor regular weather updates and heed guidance from local disaster management authorities as conditions develop.
