Phu Quoc airport expansion races toward completion ahead of APEC 2027

Workers at Phu Quoc International Airport are pushing forward with an intensive construction schedule to expand the facility's capacity, with the project now in a critical phase following its September 2025 launch. The expansion has been timed to prepare the airport for hosting increased traffic during Vietnam's APEC hosting duties in 2027, positioning the island destination as a key gateway for the region.

Recent weeks have seen heavy rainfall across Phu Quoc, yet construction teams have maintained momentum on key components of the expansion. A calibration flight was successfully completed at the facility, indicating progress on runway and navigation systems improvements needed to handle increased aircraft movements.

Traffic growth at the airport has already accelerated, with takeoffs and landings rising 44 percent as the expansion work proceeds. The surge in aircraft operations underscores the pressing need to increase the airport's infrastructure capacity to accommodate growing demand from both domestic and international carriers serving the popular island destination.

The expansion project represents a significant infrastructure investment for Vietnam's tourism sector, with planners coordinating the airport's capacity upgrades to align with the schedule for the major regional economic forum. Officials are working to ensure all components of the enhancement program are operational within the project timeline.
