Phu Quoc airport opens second runway ahead of APEC summit

The newly completed runway at Phu Quoc International Airport on Vietnam's largest island began commercial service Thursday morning, doubling the facility's capacity to handle aircraft movements. The second runway follows eight months of intensive construction and represents a significant upgrade to the airport's infrastructure ahead of Vietnam's hosting of the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in 2027.

The runway expansion is part of a broader modernization program for the island's main airport. Officials have outlined plans for a new passenger terminal building inspired by phoenix architecture, reflecting the region's cultural symbolism and design aspirations.

Phu Quoc, located in Kien Giang Province in the Mekong Delta region, has emerged as a key destination for both domestic and international travel in recent years. The airport expansion reflects growing passenger demand and the Vietnamese government's investment in transport infrastructure ahead of major regional events.

The completion of the second runway enhances the airport's ability to accommodate increased flight operations and positions Phu Quoc as a more competitive hub for regional connectivity. Construction of the new terminal facility is expected to progress in phases, with design and development continuing through 2027.

The infrastructure investments underscore Vietnam's commitment to enhancing transportation networks and hospitality capacity ahead of hosting APEC, which will bring business leaders and government officials from across the Asia-Pacific region to the country.
