Phu Quoc airport opens second runway ahead of APEC summit

The new runway at Phu Quoc International Airport began serving commercial flights on Thursday, doubling the facility's capacity and marking a significant milestone in the airport's expansion program. The runway was completed after an intensive eight-month construction period, reflecting Vietnam's commitment to enhancing transport infrastructure ahead of major international commitments.

The second runway will substantially increase the airport's throughput, allowing it to accommodate more flights and larger aircraft volumes to support the growing number of visitors to Phu Quoc, a major tourism destination in Vietnam. The expansion is expected to bolster economic activity on the island and strengthen its position as a regional travel hub.

The runway opening coincides with ongoing development of a new terminal building, which is being designed with phoenix-inspired architectural elements. The new terminal facility is scheduled for completion before Vietnam hosts the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in 2027, ensuring the airport meets international standards and accommodates the influx of high-level delegations and visitors expected during the summit.

The infrastructure enhancements at Phu Quoc International Airport form part of Vietnam's broader preparations for hosting APEC, reflecting the nation's focus on upgrading key facilities to support international engagement and economic cooperation across the Asia-Pacific region.
