Phu Quoc transforms into premier tourism hub ahead of APEC 2027
Vietnam's Pearl Island is undergoing major infrastructure development to establish itself as a world-class destination and host venue for next year's APEC Economic Leaders' Week. The transformation reflects Hanoi's strategy to position Phu Quoc as a key growth engine for high-end tourism in the region.

Phu Quoc is emerging as Vietnam's next flagship tourism destination, backed by a comprehensive national development strategy outlined in the Communist Party's Resolution No. 26-NQ/TW from August 2026. The policy designates the island as a nascent economic growth pole and luxury seaside resort centre capable of competing on the international stage while hosting major regional events.
The island's elevation comes as Vietnam prepares to chair the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in 2027. Phu Quoc has been selected to host the APEC Economic Leaders' Week, positioning it alongside established tourism centres like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang as a premier destination for international delegations and visitors.
Development efforts are leveraging Phu Quoc's natural assets—pristine beaches and scenic landscapes—while simultaneously expanding modern infrastructure. Investment programs include construction of facilities specifically designed to accommodate APEC events and enhance the island's capacity to manage international conferences and high-profile gatherings.
The strategic push also aligns with broader recognition of Phu Quoc's tourism credentials. The island recently earned recognition as Asia's best island destination in the 2026 Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards, signalling growing international appeal. Officials are additionally promoting the region's culinary offerings as a distinct advantage in attracting global tourism markets.
Policymakers view the infrastructure investments and APEC hosting opportunity as catalysts for sustained economic growth, positioning Phu Quoc to compete with regional tourism hubs while elevating Vietnam's international standing in the hospitality sector.
