PIB debunks viral fake gazette on Saturday bank holidays

A forged document purporting to be an official gazette notification has gone viral on social media, claiming that the Ministry of Finance has declared every Saturday a public holiday for all public sector banks in India. The fake notification, dated September 30, has prompted confusion among banking sector employees and customers alike.

The Press Information Bureau (PIB), the government's official media wing, has flagged the document as fraudulent, confirming that no such notification has been issued by the Finance Ministry. The PIB urged citizens to verify government announcements through official channels and be cautious of misinformation circulating on digital platforms.

This incident highlights the growing menace of fabricated government documents being shared through social media and messaging applications. Fraudulent notifications have previously caused unnecessary alarm regarding policy changes across various sectors, prompting government agencies to issue regular advisories against believing unverified claims.

Members of the public are advised to cross-check official announcements through the PIB website, ministry official portals, and authenticated government sources before accepting them as factual. The banking sector regulator and the Reserve Bank of India also issue official communications through their designated channels whenever policy changes occur.
