Pillayan Held in Custody as Murder Investigation Continues

Batticaloa Magistrate's Court has ordered the further remand of two suspects, including Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, commonly known as Pillayan, in relation to a shooting incident that occurred in the Batticaloa area in 2008. The suspects have been remanded in custody until the 27th of this month, according to an order issued by the Batticaloa Magistrate on Tuesday.

The case centres on allegations that the suspects were involved in the killing of five people using a T-56 assault rifle during the 2008 incident. The extension of their remand indicates that investigations into the matter remain ongoing.

The decision to further remand the suspects suggests that law enforcement and the judiciary have determined there is sufficient cause to continue holding them while investigative work proceeds. The case represents one of several ongoing prosecutions related to serious crimes committed during a period marked by significant security challenges in the eastern region.

The court's remand order will keep the suspects in custody for approximately two weeks from the date of Tuesday's ruling, allowing investigators additional time to gather evidence and statements related to the charges.
