The Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) has formally urged the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to strengthen its drug testing protocols for commercial aviation crew members. The proposal seeks to raise the frequency of random testing to 25% on an annual basis, representing a significant increase from present testing rates across Indian carriers.

Beyond the increased testing frequency, FIP has recommended implementing oral-fluid testing as a complementary screening method alongside traditional urine-based tests. Proponents of the dual-testing approach argue that oral-fluid analysis offers advantages in detection capability and can serve as an additional safeguard against substance abuse among flight personnel.

To validate the efficacy of the proposed changes, FIP has suggested a 12-month pilot programme that would assess multiple factors including the reliability of oral-fluid testing, operational feasibility for airlines and crew, and associated costs. The structured trial period would provide regulators and the aviation industry with empirical data before full implementation.

The move underscores ongoing industry focus on safety standards and crew fitness protocols. Enhanced drug testing regimes have been implemented globally following documented incidents linking substance abuse to aviation accidents. India's aviation sector has expanded significantly in recent years, placing renewed emphasis on maintaining rigorous safety and personnel standards across all major carriers.
