Pioneer of breast care nursing remains dedicated to patients at 74

Nagalingam Saraswathi has spent more than 30 years transforming breast cancer care in Singapore, beginning with her work to establish specialized nursing services at Singapore General Hospital in 1992. What started as an initiative to professionalize breast care has grown into a comprehensive support network that extends across multiple institutions throughout the island.

Beyond her direct patient care responsibilities, Saraswathi has played a crucial role in building institutional capacity across Singapore's healthcare system. She has trained nurses from numerous hospitals in specialized breast care techniques and best practices, effectively multiplying the impact of her pioneering work. This knowledge transfer has strengthened breast cancer nursing standards island-wide.

Recognizing the emotional and psychological dimensions of cancer care, Saraswathi also established a support group for breast cancer patients, addressing needs that extended beyond clinical treatment. This holistic approach has provided countless patients with community and understanding during their treatment journeys.

At 74 years old, Saraswathi remains actively engaged in patient care, testament to her enduring commitment to the field she helped establish. Her career demonstrates the lasting impact that dedicated healthcare professionals can achieve in improving outcomes and quality of life for cancer patients across an entire healthcare system.
