PKR deploys younger candidates to capture expanding voter base

The People's Justice Party (PKR) is pivoting its electoral strategy by recruiting younger candidates to better reflect evolving voter demographics across the country.

PKR Youth deputy chief Chiew Choon Man highlighted that the decision carries particular significance in light of two major electoral reforms. The introduction of Undi18, which lowered the voting age from 21 to 18, combined with automatic voter registration mechanisms, has substantially expanded the pool of eligible voters, particularly among younger age groups.

"These policy changes have fundamentally altered the voter landscape," Chiew noted, underscoring the rationale behind the party's candidacy adjustments. The move represents a strategic recognition that younger voters now constitute a more influential segment of the electorate.

PKR's approach mirrors broader efforts across Malaysian political parties to realign their representation and messaging with demographic realities. The strategy aims to establish stronger connections with newly enfranchised voters while ensuring the party's candidate slate reflects the increasingly youthful composition of the Malaysian electorate.

The initiative comes as political parties nationwide recalibrate their positions ahead of upcoming electoral contests, with youth engagement emerging as a central consideration in campaign planning and resource allocation.
