PKR politician Nik Nazmi confirms detention by religious authorities

Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, a prominent PKR politician, confirmed on Monday that he was detained by the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) in connection with a meeting with a woman to discuss a project matter.

The lawmaker acknowledged that his decision to meet the woman constituted an error of judgment. In a statement, he expressed regret over the incident and formally apologised to his family, his party Bersatu, and those affected by the matter.

Nik Nazmi committed to providing full cooperation throughout the legal process, signalling his intention to comply with authorities investigating the case. The detention reflects ongoing scrutiny by religious authorities in Malaysia regarding conduct matters under Islamic law.

The incident underscores the complex intersection of professional obligations and personal conduct standards that public figures in Malaysia must navigate, particularly those subject to religious authority oversight.
