Plastic Bank calls for stronger waste management, proper segregation

MANILA — Plastic Bank has renewed calls for the Philippines to strengthen its waste management infrastructure and household segregation practices, cautioning that discarded materials do not disappear once collected by garbage trucks but instead relocate to other areas.

The organization stressed that the assumption that waste problems are resolved once trash leaves residential areas masks a deeper issue. When waste management systems fail to properly process and contain refuse, the environmental and health consequences extend well beyond overflowing landfills and visible litter.

Plastic Bank emphasized that effective waste management requires a comprehensive approach combining proper segregation at the source, adequate collection systems, and appropriate disposal or recycling infrastructure. Without such integrated systems, waste destined for landfills or inadequate facilities can contaminate waterways, soil, and air quality across communities.

The call comes as the Philippines continues to grapple with mounting waste volumes and limited disposal capacity in urban centers. Experts note that household segregation remains critical in reducing the burden on waste management facilities and improving prospects for recycling and recovery of valuable materials.
