Dr. Amarasuriya departed from Bandaranaike International Airport on Thursday, 31 October, to represent Sri Lanka at the biennial CHOGM in St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda. The visit, scheduled to conclude on 6 November, places the Prime Minister among world leaders attending one of the Commonwealth's most significant diplomatic forums.
The CHOGM provides a platform for heads of government to address shared challenges and opportunities across the 56-member Commonwealth. The gathering typically includes substantive discussions on political, economic, and social issues affecting member nations across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, the Americas, Europe, and the Pacific.
During her week-long overseas mission, the Prime Minister is expected to engage in bilateral meetings with counterparts from other Commonwealth nations. Such engagements typically enable participating leaders to forge closer ties and explore avenues for cooperation in trade, development, and regional security matters.
The summit in Antigua and Barbuda represents a key diplomatic outing for Sri Lanka's leadership, offering an opportunity to raise the nation's interests on the Commonwealth stage and strengthen relationships with fellow member states.
