CYBERJAYA — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has stressed the importance of balancing technological advancement with human judgement in tax administration, as Malaysia's digital tax ecosystem expands rapidly. Speaking on the matter, Anwar emphasised that while automation and digital systems enhance efficiency, the expertise and discretionary decision-making of tax professionals remain essential to fair and effective tax collection. As of November 2, approximately 269,900 taxpayers have embraced Malaysia's e-invoicing system, collectively submitting 2.14 billion electronic invoices. The substantial uptake demonstrates growing confidence in the Inland Revenue Board's digitalisation initiatives. However, Anwar's remarks highlight concerns that an over-reliance on automated systems could overlook nuanced circumstances that warrant human review and consideration. The Prime Minister's call reflects a broader recognition across government agencies that technology, while transformative, should complement rather than replace skilled personnel in critical administrative functions. The Inland Revenue Board has been tasked with refining its approach to ensure taxpayers receive fair treatment while maintaining the integrity and efficiency of Malaysia's tax system.
