PM Anwar Demands AG Apologise Over Najib Pardon Row

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has directed the Attorney-General to apologise and request a meeting with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in connection with disagreements surrounding former prime minister Najib Razak's conditional pardon.

Anwar emphasised that the king's decision to grant Najib a conditional pardon represents a sovereign act that must be upheld and respected by all parties involved. The Prime Minister's position underscores the constitutional authority vested in the monarch regarding matters of clemency and pardons.

The directive comes amid tensions between the government and the Attorney-General's office over the handling of Najib's case, particularly concerning conditions attached to the pardon. Anwar's call for dialogue with the palace signals an attempt to resolve the dispute through proper constitutional channels.

The former prime minister was previously sentenced to prison over financial misconduct charges related to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad scandal. The conditional pardon granted by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has become a point of contention, with various stakeholders holding differing views on its appropriateness and implementation.
