The Prime Minister's directive came in response to weather warnings indicating heavier precipitation patterns expected across the Western Province in the near term. Dr. Amarasuriya instructed relevant government departments and local authorities to prioritize the clearing of canals and drainage infrastructure throughout the Colombo District to maximize water flow capacity and minimize flood risks.
The cleaning initiative encompasses both major canal systems and localized drainage networks across urban and semi-urban areas. Officials have been tasked with removing accumulated debris, silt, and obstructions that may impede water drainage during heavy rainfall periods.
Beyond the two-week completion target for immediate cleanup activities, the Prime Minister has emphasized the need for systematic, ongoing maintenance protocols to sustain drainage efficiency. Authorities have been instructed to establish regular monitoring and maintenance schedules to prevent future blockages and ensure year-round operational readiness of the drainage systems.
The directive reflects growing attention to urban infrastructure management as climate patterns continue to produce unpredictable weather variations across Sri Lanka. Colombo District has historically experienced waterlogging and flooding during monsoon seasons, prompting preventive measures ahead of forecast rainfall increases.
