The Prime Minister has outlined ambitious targets for Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM), positioning the institution as a catalyst for the nation's educational and technological advancement. The university is tasked with developing into a comprehensive hub encompassing education, scientific research, technology development, innovation and digital transformation initiatives.
Under the directive, VNU-HCM is expected to achieve regional prominence within the coming decade, targeting a position within Asia's top 100 higher education institutions by 2030. The long-term vision extends to 2045, by which time the university is to establish itself as one of Southeast Asia's leading research-focused university systems.
A key performance indicator outlined in the plan calls for at least four academic disciplines to attain placement within the global top 50 rankings. This reflects an emphasis on developing centers of excellence across multiple fields rather than concentrating resources in isolated areas.
The directive arrives as Vietnamese higher education institutions work to strengthen their international standing. The emphasis on research capacity and innovation aligns with broader national priorities to reduce dependency on foreign expertise and establish domestic capabilities in strategic fields.
