PMLA court clears asset sale to settle NSEL creditor claims

Mumbai's special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court has granted permission to monetise assets seized by the Enforcement Directorate, paving the way for a structured settlement of claims stemming from the National Spot Exchange Limited (NSEL) collapse.

The court's decision permits the sale of attached assets valued at ₹3,464 crore, with proceeds allocated toward a ₹1,950 crore settlement package for 5,682 specified creditors. The move represents a significant step in resolving the long-standing dispute that emerged from the commodity trading platform's financial crisis.

The NSEL case has affected thousands of investors and traders since the exchange suspended operations in 2013 following a liquidity crisis. The settlement framework aims to provide partial recovery to creditors whose funds remained locked in the system following the exchange's collapse.

The court's approval of the asset monetisation process is expected to expedite the distribution of settlement funds to eligible claimants. The exact timeline for asset liquidation and creditor payouts will be determined through subsequent procedural steps as outlined by the court order.

The development comes as authorities continue efforts to recover and redistribute funds in one of India's significant commodity trading disputes, with the settlement structure attempting to balance creditor interests against broader investigation requirements.
