Punjab National Bank announced its second-quarter results on Tuesday, with net profit climbing 13 per cent year-on-year to Rs 5,532 crore, reflecting improved financial performance across key metrics.

Net interest income, a measure of core lending profitability, expanded by 11 per cent during the same period, indicating stronger growth in the bank's traditional lending business. The expansion in NII came amid a growing credit portfolio and disciplined management of deposit costs.

Asset quality showed marked improvement, with the bank successfully reducing stressed assets and strengthening its provision coverage. The metrics suggest PNB's efforts to clean up its balance sheet and enhance loan underwriting standards are yielding results.

The results underscore the steady recovery in India's state-owned banking sector, with improved credit demand and declining non-performing asset ratios supporting earnings growth. The bank's operational efficiency metrics and capital adequacy ratios remained within regulatory requirements, positioning the lender for sustained performance.
