The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) and Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a Ministry of Power enterprise, have signed a memorandum of understanding to accelerate the deployment of intelligent metering infrastructure in India's piped natural gas (PNG) distribution systems.
Under the agreement, the two organizations will work to introduce advanced metering technology that enables real-time monitoring and data analytics across PNG networks serving both commercial and residential consumers. The initiative is expected to reduce losses in gas distribution, improve billing accuracy, and provide consumers with greater visibility into their consumption patterns.
The partnership leverages EESL's established expertise in energy efficiency projects and technology implementation alongside PNGRB's regulatory oversight of the natural gas sector. Smart metering systems are seen as critical infrastructure modernization efforts as India expands its PNG network to meet growing energy demands across cities and towns.
The collaboration comes as the government prioritizes digital transformation in utility services and seeks to enhance the operational performance of gas distribution companies. Implementation details and timelines for the smart metering rollout are expected to be finalized through subsequent discussions between the regulatory authority and participating distributors.
