Authorities in the Mimaropa region have dismantled a significant cigarette smuggling operation following a sustained crackdown on illegal tobacco trade. The Philippine National Police conducted 31 enforcement operations between January and September, targeting illicit cigarette distribution networks in Palawan and Puerto Princesa City.

The coordinated police campaign resulted in the confiscation of smuggled cigarette products and related contraband materials estimated at P37.16 million in total value. The operations also led to the arrest of 47 individuals suspected of involvement in the smuggling activities, with cases filed against the suspects for violating tobacco tax and smuggling laws.

The Mimaropa police region, which covers Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan, has intensified its focus on combating organized smuggling networks that have historically used the area's maritime corridors and remote coastal areas to transport illegal goods. Officials said the enforcement actions reflect broader efforts by the PNP to disrupt supply chains and address revenue losses caused by untaxed cigarette sales.

The crackdown comes as Philippine authorities continue efforts to strengthen border security and customs enforcement across the southern and eastern regions, where contraband trafficking remains a persistent challenge.
