PNP deploys 2,500 officers, implements firearm restrictions for Bicol festival

LEGAZPI CITY — The Philippine National Police has announced a temporary ban on civilian firearms in Naga City, Camarines Sur, as part of heightened security measures for the annual Peñafrancia Festival. The suspension of permits to carry firearms outside residences will remain in effect from September 3 to 21, according to Bicol Police Director Brig. Gen. Randy Glenn Silvio.

The security operation will involve 2,500 police personnel deployed across the festival venue and surrounding areas. The deployment aims to manage the large crowds expected to attend the week-long religious observance, one of the most significant celebrations in the Bicol region that draws thousands of devotees and tourists annually.

The firearm restriction is part of a comprehensive security plan designed to prevent incidents and maintain order during the festivities. Police officials noted that the measure is temporary and applies only to the duration of the festival in Naga City, with exceptions expected for authorized security personnel and law enforcement.

The Peñafrancia Festival, dedicated to Our Lady of Peñafrancia, is celebrated with processions, religious services, and cultural activities. Previous years have seen substantial attendance, necessitating coordinated police operations to manage traffic, prevent crime, and respond to emergencies.
