PNP endorses task force for comprehensive ferry fire investigation

Manila—Authorities have established an inter-agency investigation team to examine the circumstances surrounding the catastrophic fire aboard the MV June Aster, a passenger vessel operated by Atienza Interisland Ferries that was transiting between Manila and Palawan when disaster struck.

The Philippine National Police confirmed its backing for the task force as recovery efforts continue and the death toll climbed to 77. Eight additional passengers remain unaccounted for, keeping rescue and salvage operations active in the waters where the ferry caught fire.

The multi-agency approach aims to determine the cause of the blaze and identify any factors that may have contributed to the vessel's rapid spread of fire and subsequent loss of life. Such investigations typically examine maritime safety protocols, crew training, vessel maintenance records, and compliance with international shipping standards.
