PNP intensifies crackdown on illegal power connections and theft

The Philippine National Police announced a renewed effort to tackle the persistent problem of power theft and illegal electricity connections, pledging stronger coordination with the Department of Justice and Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) to build robust cases against offenders.

PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. outlined the intensified campaign during a briefing Friday, emphasizing the need to address the widespread practice that drains resources from the power sector and affects service delivery nationwide.

The multi-agency approach aims to improve evidence gathering and case documentation to ensure successful prosecutions. By working closely with Meralco's investigation teams and DOJ prosecutors, the PNP seeks to establish a more effective legal framework for holding violators accountable.

Electricity theft remains a significant challenge in the Philippines, affecting both utilities' revenues and the broader population through higher costs and service reliability issues. Officials noted that coordinated enforcement across national and local police units would be essential to achieving meaningful results in the campaign.
