PNP launches cybercrime probe into fake account impersonating police chief

The Philippine National Police has ordered its cybercrime unit to investigate a bogus Facebook account impersonating the organization's leadership, according to a statement from the agency. The discovery of the fraudulent profile prompted officials to issue a public alert about the dangers of fake accounts designed to deceive citizens and potentially facilitate scams.

The PNP emphasized that it maintains official social media channels through verified accounts and urged the public to exercise caution when interacting with police-related profiles online. Authorities advised citizens to report suspicious accounts and avoid sharing personal information with unverified sources claiming to represent law enforcement.

The investigation underscores a growing problem of social engineering and online fraud targeting Filipinos. Cybercriminals increasingly impersonate high-ranking officials and institutions to build false credibility, using such accounts to solicit money, steal personal data, or distribute malicious links.

The PNP's cybercrime division has been tasked with identifying those responsible for creating and operating the counterfeit account. Authorities have not disclosed additional details about the fraudulent profile or its suspected operators.
