MANILA — The Philippine National Police said it would ramp up its search for Senator Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa following his failure to meet a Friday deadline for voluntary surrender, according to a senior PNP official.
Dela Rosa, who served as Philippine National Police chief from 2016 to 2018, is subject to an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court in connection with alleged crimes committed during the government's war on drugs.
The former police chief's non-compliance with the surrender deadline has prompted authorities to prepare for more aggressive pursuit operations. Officials did not specify a new timeline for apprehension efforts or provide additional details about the planned intensification of the manhunt.
Dela Rosa's case represents a significant development in the ICC's investigation into killings linked to the anti-drug campaign that resulted in thousands of deaths during the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte.
