PNP urges communities to identify warning signs of school violence

MANILA—The Philippine National Police has urged communities to play a more active role in preventing school violence by learning to recognize warning signs, arguing that campus safety depends on collective awareness beyond traditional security infrastructure.

The call comes after an August 18 incident at Ateneo de Zamboanga University Junior High School that resulted in two student deaths. The tragedy underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to student protection that extends beyond guards, surveillance cameras, and other physical security systems.

PNP officials emphasized that schools and surrounding communities must work together to identify behavioral and situational indicators that may precede violent incidents. The police stressed that early detection and intervention by alert community members can be instrumental in preventing tragedies before they occur.

The appeal represents a shift toward community-based prevention strategies alongside traditional security measures.
