MANILA—The Philippine National Police (PNP) has called on the public to exercise greater responsibility when using social media, citing recent cases in Sultan Kudarat and South Cotabato where students posted content related to firearms online.
"Let this be a reminder that social media is not a place to make threats or create fear," Philippine National Police chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said in response to the incidents.
The separate cases have prompted authorities to reiterate warnings about the misuse of social media platforms. The PNP did not provide detailed information about the exact nature of the posts or the circumstances surrounding each incident, but stressed the importance of digital responsibility among young users.
The advisory comes as law enforcement agencies continue to monitor online activity for potential security threats. Authorities reminded citizens that inflammatory or threatening posts on social platforms can trigger investigations and may result in legal consequences under existing Philippine laws.
The PNP urged parents, educators, and community leaders to work with students in promoting safe and responsible internet usage practices.
