Police bust international online scam ring in Perak

Police in Perak have dismantled what they describe as an international telecommunications fraud operation following the arrest of several foreign nationals. The suspects, comprising Japanese and Chinese citizens, are believed to have orchestrated a coordinated scamming network from a call centre base in the state.

According to law enforcement officials, the criminal group employed a deception scheme that involved posing as legitimate Japanese police officers when contacting their targets. The callers would use social engineering tactics to convince victims they were involved in legal troubles or financial irregularities, pressuring them to transfer money or provide personal financial information.

The arrests mark another development in Malaysia's ongoing efforts to crack down on transnational cybercrime operations that use the country as a base for targeting victims across Asia. Authorities have intensified scrutiny of call centres suspected of facilitating such activities, particularly those targeting Japan and other developed markets where victims are more likely to have accessible funds.
