The shooting incident captured in the widely-circulated video took place during an arrest operation at a water village in Tawau, Sabah, police confirmed on Tuesday. The suspect targeted in the operation was sought in connection with multiple serious offences, including rape and the strangulation of a police officer during an earlier encounter.

Police said the arrest operation became necessary due to the suspect's violent history and resistance to apprehension. The video, which spread rapidly across social media platforms, showed officers engaging the suspect in the densely-populated residential area as residents looked on from nearby structures.

Authorities have not disclosed whether the suspect was successfully apprehended or details of any injuries sustained during the operation. Police said the clarification was issued to provide accurate context regarding the incident, which had generated widespread public concern following its online circulation.

The Sabah Police contingent is continuing investigations into the matter. Officers involved in the operation are understood to have followed standard procedures for high-risk arrest situations.
