Police deployed at Calicut University after student union poll violence

Calicut University in Kerala witnessed significant unrest as rival student groups clashed during the counting of votes for the student union elections. The incident prompted university authorities to suspend classes and request police deployment on campus to prevent further escalation of tensions.

According to reports, the violence erupted as different student factions gathered at the counting venue, with disagreements over electoral procedures sparking physical confrontations between the groups. The exact number of those injured and the specific triggers for the clash remain unclear at this stage.

Police personnel have established a visible presence across the university campus to monitor the situation and prevent any recurrence of violence. University administration has launched an investigation into the circumstances that led to the altercation and the conduct of both groups involved.

The suspension of classes reflects the institution's decision to prioritise campus safety while authorities work to restore normalcy. University officials are likely to review security measures for future student electoral processes to prevent similar incidents.
