Police conducted mass detentions of over 1,000 people as opposition leader Dipke proceeded to Delhi to spearhead a protest scheduled at Jantar Mantar, the iconic demonstration site in the national capital. The detentions occurred ahead of the planned show of strength by the Citizens for Justice Party (CJP), which is pressing for the ouster of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the electoral rolls.
Dipke characterized the security restrictions imposed by authorities as reminiscent of the Emergency period, the 21-month constitutional crisis declared in 1975 that saw widespread arrests and suppression of civil liberties. The comparison underscored opposition concerns about the government's handling of dissent and its control over electoral processes.
The CJP's core grievance centres on what it terms significant irregularities in the Special Inclusion Report (SIR) of electoral rolls, which determines voter eligibility across constituencies. The party has mobilized support for Kumar's removal, viewing his continuation in office as compromising the independence and credibility of India's electoral machinery.
The detention operation reflected intensified security measures in the capital ahead of the demonstration, signalling heightened tensions between the government and opposition parties over electoral governance and civil liberties protections.
