GEORGE TOWN — Penang police have dismantled an international scam syndicate operating a bogus scratch-and-win lottery scheme, leading to the arrest of 29 suspects involved in the operation. The criminal network targeted unsuspecting victims across multiple countries, with investigations revealing sophisticated coordination between local and overseas operatives.
The scam generated illicit proceeds estimated at US$2 million, according to police findings. Victims were typically lured through online platforms and social media with promises of winning substantial cash prizes from fabricated lottery draws. Once engaged, targets were convinced to make advance payments under various pretexts, including fees, taxes, or investment requirements, before any purported winnings could be released.
Police investigations traced the operation to multiple locations within Penang and neighbouring states. The syndicate employed professional-grade marketing materials and employed call centre tactics to maintain victim confidence throughout the fraud process. Officers recovered mobile phones, computer equipment, banking documents, and cash during coordinated raids on suspected operation centres.
Authorities have referred cases to the relevant federal agencies for further investigation and prosecution. Police urged the public to remain vigilant against unsolicited lottery claims and to verify such offers through official channels before engaging financially.
