Police DNA lab records 420 matches, seeks advanced forensic technology

KUALA LUMPUR — The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is seeking to strengthen its forensic investigation capacity through technological upgrades to its DNA Analysis Laboratory, which has recorded 420 matches to date.
The enhancement initiative, backed by an allocation of RM11 million, aims to equip the laboratory with more sophisticated equipment and systems to improve the speed and accuracy of DNA analysis in criminal investigations.
Inspector-General of Police said the investment reflects the force's commitment to modernising its forensic capabilities in line with international standards. The upgraded laboratory is expected to process DNA evidence more efficiently, supporting investigations across various crime categories and helping to accelerate case resolution.
The push for advanced forensic technology comes as law enforcement agencies worldwide increasingly rely on DNA evidence in criminal investigations. Enhanced capabilities would enable Malaysian police to better compete with regional counterparts and strengthen the chain of evidence in prosecutions.
Offcials have indicated that the technology upgrade will be implemented in phases, with priority given to equipment that addresses current operational bottlenecks in forensic analysis.
