Police dog's tracking skills lead to dramatic rescue of missing elderly hiker

David Arai, a 70-year-old trekker, was reported missing after failing to return from a hike in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Search teams deployed Trina, a Labrador trained in tracking and rescue operations, to locate the missing man in the dense, challenging terrain characteristic of the volcanic landscape.

Trina successfully navigated through thick foliage and located Arai approximately two miles from his rental vehicle after more than a day of searching. The hiker was found in a dehydrated condition but otherwise in stable health, requiring immediate attention from the search and rescue team that accompanied the dog.

Arai expressed profound gratitude toward his rescuers and the police department's canine unit following his recovery. The successful operation highlighted Trina's capabilities, marking her second rescue mission in recent times, adding to her impressive track record in search and rescue operations.

Moved by the dog's role in saving his life, Arai has indicated his intention to pursue adoption of Trina following her retirement from active service. The case underscores the critical role trained rescue dogs play in locating missing persons in challenging environmental conditions.
