KORONADAL CITY — Police in Sarangani province are conducting an investigation to identify those responsible for an illicit shipment of sodium cyanide discovered in an abandoned vehicle, with authorities estimating the chemical's value at P1.92 million.

Maj. Herman Luna, chief of the Maasim Municipal Police Station, said the toxic substance was found in the coastal town of Maasim, packed in 32 separate sacks totaling at least two tons. Sodium cyanide is classified as a highly poisonous chemical compound with potentially fatal health and environmental consequences.

The circumstances surrounding how the truck came to be abandoned and the intended destination of the chemical shipment remain unclear. Police have launched efforts to trace the ownership and identify individuals connected to the illicit transport of the hazardous material.

The discovery underscores ongoing concerns about the smuggling and illegal movement of dangerous substances through the country's ports and provincial areas. Authorities have not yet disclosed additional details regarding the investigation or whether any suspects have been identified.
