Police Media Spokesperson ASP F. U. Wootler said the department has arrested 208 officers on charges including drug-related crimes as part of an ongoing purge of misconduct within the ranks. The initiative reflects growing concern over corruption and unsuitable conduct among law enforcement personnel.
In addition to the arrests, nearly 1,500 police officers have been suspended pending investigation and disciplinary proceedings. Wootler acknowledged during an appearance on the Ada Derana programme Big Focus that corrupt elements exist within the police department and that systematic action is required to address the problem.
The spokesperson said identification and removal of unsuitable officers remains a priority for police leadership. The crackdown appears designed to strengthen public confidence in law enforcement and address persistent concerns about institutional integrity within the police service.
The disciplinary actions represent one of the most significant internal reviews of police conduct in recent years, signalling a commitment by senior leadership to tackle corruption and restore professional standards across the department.
