Police launch nationwide crackdown on crime hotspots starting in Penang

BUTTERWORTH — The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is intensifying its efforts to combat crime in poorly lit, abandoned and neglected locations through a nationwide expansion of its Whitening The Black Spot initiative.

The programme, which targets crime-prone areas identified as having elevated criminal activity, will commence operations in Penang before extending to other states. The initiative focuses on high-risk zones that have become havens for criminal activity due to inadequate infrastructure, poor lighting and lack of police presence.

According to the PDRM, the operation aims to restore safety in these forgotten areas through increased patrols, improved surveillance and community engagement. The force has identified specific locations within Penang as priority zones requiring immediate intervention.

The nationwide rollout represents a strategic shift towards addressing crime at its source by improving conditions in areas that criminals exploit. Officials stated the initiative will complement existing crime prevention programmes and involve coordination with local authorities and community leaders.

The PDRM has urged residents in targeted areas to report suspicious activities and cooperate with police operations to ensure the success of the crackdown.
