Police Make Youths Do Push-ups After Stopping Bike With Minor Girl

Law enforcement personnel in Jharkali, West Bengal, stopped a motorcycle at around 1 a.m. after spotting the vehicle on a road with four occupants—three young men and a minor girl. The traffic check escalated into an on-the-spot disciplinary action when police questioned the riders about their late-night movement with the underage passenger.

The three men were ordered to perform push-ups on the roadside while holding their ears, a traditional form of physical punishment often administered in schools and by authority figures in India. The incident took place after the initial traffic stop led to questioning about why the group was out at that hour.

The police action reflects approaches sometimes adopted by law enforcement in smaller towns and rural areas to enforce public order and safety. However, such methods of on-the-spot punishment have occasionally generated debate regarding appropriate enforcement procedures. The minor girl was reportedly questioned separately regarding her safety and circumstances.
