P Sundramoorthy from Universiti Sains Malaysia highlighted that artificial intelligence has the potential to substantially improve police performance across various law enforcement tasks. As criminal networks increasingly adopt AI-driven methods for activities ranging from fraud to organised crime, police agencies risk falling behind without comparable technological capabilities.
The researcher's warning comes as regional law enforcement agencies grapple with the rapid evolution of crime methodologies enabled by advancing technology. Sundramoorthy emphasised that implementing AI solutions could enhance investigative efficiency, predictive capabilities, and resource allocation across police departments.
The adoption of AI in policing remains inconsistent across Southeast Asia, with varying levels of investment and implementation. Experts suggest that coordinated efforts to develop AI-based law enforcement tools could provide significant advantages in preventing and solving crimes.
