Police officer and four others held in custody as investigations continue

Chief Inspector Varuni Bogahawatta, who previously served as Officer-in-Charge of the Administration Division at Kotawila Police Station, and four other suspects were further remanded in custody by the Matara Chief Magistrate's Court. Magistrate Chathura Dissanayake ordered their detention to be extended until November 20 following a request from the Criminal Investigation Department.

The CID advised the court that investigative work into the case remained ongoing and additional time would be required to complete their inquiries. The extension was granted to facilitate the continuation of these investigations.

Details regarding the specific allegations against Bogahawatta and the other suspects have not been disclosed. The case remains under active investigation by the CID, with authorities expected to provide further updates as their work progresses.

The remand extension reflects standard judicial procedure in cases where investigative agencies require additional time to gather evidence and complete their inquiries before potential charges are laid.
