MANILA—Philippine police said rallies marking the 54th anniversary of Martial Law unfolded peacefully over the weekend, with security forces maintaining order while allowing protesters to exercise their constitutional rights.
The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) commended both law enforcement personnel and event organizers for their coordination in managing the multisectoral demonstrations across Metro Manila. The police said the collaborative approach enabled demonstrators to voice their concerns without disrupting public safety.
More than 17,000 police officers were mobilized starting Saturday night to oversee the rallies, which drew various groups including activists commemorating the declaration of Martial Law under the late President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. in 1972. The extended police deployment aimed to prevent potential clashes and maintain traffic flow in key areas of the capital region.
The NCRPO's assessment underscores ongoing efforts by Philippine authorities to balance security concerns with protection of citizens' democratic freedoms. Officials said advance coordination with rally organizers helped ensure smooth operations throughout the weekend demonstrations.
