Police probe into custodial death may be premature, says DAP MP

Lee, commonly known as Rayer, argued that the police may have jumped to conclusions by limiting their probe to a specific legal framework at such an early stage of the investigation. The DAP lawmaker raised concerns that prematurely classifying the case could potentially constrain the scope of the inquiry and prejudge its outcome.

Noorizwan died while in police custody in circumstances that remain under investigation. The decision to frame the investigation under Section 331, which covers causing hurt by act endangering life or limb, has drawn scrutiny from opposition politicians and rights advocates who contend that more serious charges should remain on the table.

Lee's remarks reflect broader concerns about custodial deaths in Malaysia and calls for thorough, independent investigations into such incidents. The MP suggested that authorities should maintain an open investigative framework rather than limiting inquiries to predetermined legal categories before evidence is fully examined.

The police have not commented on the classification of their investigation, which remains ongoing. Rights groups have previously called for greater transparency and accountability in cases involving deaths in state custody.
