Police seize over 350 kilos of toxic puffer fish in Albay bust

Police in Albay apprehended two individuals and recovered about 350 kilograms of dried puffer fish, known locally as "tikong," during a raid Sunday morning at Pioduran port in Barangay 4. The confiscated seafood was valued at around 52,500 pesos, according to Col. Noel Nuñez, Albay police provincial director.
The arrests occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. at the fishing port, based on intelligence provided by a concerned citizen. Puffer fish contain tetrodotoxin, a potent neurotoxin, and their sale for human consumption is prohibited in the Philippines due to health and safety concerns.
The operation reflects ongoing law enforcement efforts to prevent the distribution of dangerous seafood products in local markets. Authorities continue to investigate the source of the seized catch and the intended market for the shipment. The two suspects are facing appropriate charges in connection with the illegal possession and attempted distribution of the toxic fish.
