COTABATO CITY — Philippine National Police personnel operating in Maguindanao del Norte conducted a successful anti-smuggling operation on Friday, August 21, that netted P1.4 million worth of illegally imported cigarettes.
Brigadier General Christopher Abecia, director of the Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region, confirmed the seizure and said the enforcement action yielded three arrests. The operation targeted the illegal distribution network for contraband tobacco products operating within the region.
The confiscated cigarettes are being held as evidence while authorities investigate the source of the shipment and the individuals involved in the smuggling operation. Police did not disclose additional details regarding the location of the bust or the identities of those arrested pending the completion of their initial investigation.
The seizure represents the latest in a series of anti-contraband operations conducted by police units across the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region, as authorities intensify efforts to combat the illegal tobacco trade that deprives the government of substantial tax revenues.
