Law enforcement officials recovered the illicit cigarette shipment during separate operations conducted Thursday across the coastal regions of Sulu province. The contraband, comprising 109 master cases, represents a significant seizure in the ongoing effort to combat smuggling activities in the strategically sensitive southern corridor.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Shellamie Chang, spokesperson for the Police Regional Office (PRO) 9 based in Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur, confirmed the interception Saturday. The operations targeted smuggling routes that have long been exploited by criminal syndicates moving illegal goods through the country's maritime borders.
The seized cigarettes remain in police custody pending investigation and documentation. Authorities have not yet disclosed details regarding suspected recipients or the origin of the contraband shipment. The case underscores persistent challenges facing security forces in monitoring extensive coastal areas prone to illicit trafficking activities.
The operation contributes to broader anti-smuggling campaigns targeting the Mindanao region, where porous maritime boundaries and remote terrain continue to facilitate illegal trade networks.
