Police in Anantapur district shot and arrested the suspect following a confrontation in Atmakur forest on Sunday evening. The accused, identified as Hemant, is alleged to have attacked two female students with a chainsaw inside their classroom at a government school in Raptadu nearly a week earlier.
According to Anantapur Superintendent of Police Jagadeesh, authorities received information around 6 pm on Sunday that the suspect was hiding on the outskirts of Atmakur forest. Police formed 15 teams to conduct the operation, with two teams dispatched to the forest area.
When personnel approached the suspect, police said Hemant appeared to be in an intoxicated state and was carrying a knife. After initial warnings, officers fired shots into the air in an attempt to control the situation. Police said the suspect continued to resist and attacked one of the inspectors, causing injury, prompting police to open fire and arrest him.
The incident marked the culmination of a search operation that began on Saturday following the October 31 classroom attack. The nature and extent of injuries sustained by the two students remain unclear from official statements.
