Police warn of fake priests soliciting money at Metro Manila cemeteries

MANILA—Law enforcement authorities in the capital region are cautioning citizens to remain vigilant against fraudsters disguising themselves as clergy members to extort money from cemetery visitors during the traditional Undas season.

The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) issued the advisory ahead of the annual November observance, when Metro Manila's cemeteries, memorial parks and columbaria typically see a surge in foot traffic. The fake priests approach visitors under the pretext of offering religious services, soliciting donations that are pocketed rather than directed toward legitimate religious purposes.

The NCRPO urged families planning cemetery visits to verify the credentials of any clergy member offering services and to report suspicious individuals to nearby police personnel stationed at burial grounds during the holiday period. Authorities recommend visiting cemeteries in groups and exercising caution when approached by unfamiliar individuals soliciting funds.

The warning reflects ongoing concerns about criminal activity targeting holiday crowds at burial sites. Security personnel will be deployed at major cemeteries and memorial parks throughout Metro Manila during the Undas period to help deter such schemes and assist the public.
