Political differences should not block progress, Anwar tells MPs

Anwar Ibrahim has called on political stakeholders to set aside differences in pursuit of national progress, underscoring the importance of the confidence and supply agreement reached between the federal government and opposition members of parliament.

The prime minister said the pact represents a significant step toward ensuring political stability and continuity at a time when Malaysia faces multiple economic and social challenges. He stressed that the arrangement would enable the government to focus on implementing its legislative priorities without the distraction of frequent political disruptions.

Under the confidence and supply agreement, opposition MPs have committed to supporting government votes on matters of confidence and supply, though they remain free to oppose other legislation on policy grounds. This framework is intended to provide the government with a more predictable parliamentary environment to advance its agenda.

Anwar highlighted that the 2027 budget contains crucial initiatives designed to benefit Malaysians across various sectors. He expressed confidence that the stability provided by the opposition's support would allow these programmes to proceed without delay.

The prime minister's remarks signal an attempt to foster cross-party cooperation on matters of national importance, even as political competition continues between government and opposition parties on other fronts.
