Political solution for Sri Lankan Tamils serves India's strategic interests

Visvalingam Manivannan, who previously served as mayor of Jaffna in Sri Lanka's Northern Province, has underscored the importance of resolving the longstanding Tamil political question, stating that such a settlement would align with India's broader strategic objectives in South Asia.

Manivannan highlighted the limitations facing the Tamil diaspora communities settled in Western countries, noting they are constrained in their ability to travel directly to Jaffna and engage in ground-level efforts to advance their community's political aspirations. This restriction, he suggested, underscores the need for solutions to be negotiated and implemented through other channels.

The remarks come amid ongoing tensions in Sri Lanka regarding the status and political representation of the Tamil minority. India, with its significant Tamil population and historical ties to the island's Tamil communities, has long maintained an interest in the political settlement of these issues.

Manivannan's comments suggest that addressing Tamil political concerns through a comprehensive settlement framework could contribute to regional stability and align with India's interests in maintaining constructive relations across the Indian Ocean region. The former municipal leader's observations reflect broader discussions within Tamil political circles about achieving sustainable solutions to historical grievances.
